The reason for his first long silence may be Sibelius’s discovery in the 1890s of the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic that was to provide him with both subject matter and inspiration, but which lent itself more readily to an orchestral treatment. But then there is a gap of almost twenty years before Sibelius wrote his by far most famous work in the genre, the Quartet in D minor ‘Voces intimae’, and in spite of its favourable reception, he didn’t compose another work for string quartet apart from the brief Andante festivo, in 1922. The two previous discs in this trilogy of his complete works for quartet contain substantial programmes of the music written between 18, and more than half of the present disc is taken up by two works written in 1890. Jean Sibelius’s relationship to the string quartet genre is something of an enigma. A significant number of these compositions will ultimately be published by Breitkopf & Härtel.BBC Music Magazine: outstanding Klassik Heute: outstanding. Many of these works are now known by JS numbers, referring to the alphabetical list of Jean Sibelius’s compositions without opus number used in Dahlström’s above-mentioned catalogue. In 1982 the Sibelius family donated a major collection of manuscripts to Helsinki University Library (HUL, now the National Library of Finland). A full description of the development of Sibelius’s opus numbers is found in Fabian Dahlström’s Jean Sibelius: Thematisch-bibliographisches Verzeichnis seiner Werke (Breitkopf & Härtel 2003, pp.680–692). Not until 1903 did his works start to be published with opus numbers, and only from 1930–31 onwards can the numbering be regarded as definitive. The composer first produced a numbered list of works in 1896, and a list of opus numbers the following year, but many of these numbers were later changed. The opus numbering of Sibelius’s works contains many inconsistencies and illogicalities. The links on this page lead to fuller descriptions of the works listed (members only).
